110 million people forcibly displaced as Sudan, Ukraine wars add to world refugee crisis, UN says
The U.N. says 110 million people in the world today have had to flee their homes because of conflict, persecution, or human rights violations. The war in Sudan has displaced nearly 2 million people since it started April 12. Conflicts in Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Myanmar have also led to the record-breaking figure. Filippo Grandi, who leads the U.N.

UN climate chief says fossil fuel phase out key to curbing warming but may not be on talks’ agenda

UN climate chief calls fossil fuel phase out key to curbing warming but may not be on talks' agenda
The United Nations climate chief says phasing out all fossil fuels is central to curbing global warming. But in an interview with The Associated Press he also says the concept might not make it on agenda of “make-or-break” international climate negotiations this fall. United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell says he couldn’t quite promise that the idea of a fossil fuel phase out would get a spot on the agenda in climate talks because that's up to the conference president.

Earth is 'really quite sick now' and in danger zone in nearly all ecological ways, study says
A new study says Earth has pushed past seven out of eight scientifically established safety limits and into “the danger zone,” not just for an overheating planet that’s losing its natural areas, but for well-being of people living on it. The study, published Wednesday, looks not just at guardrails for the planetary ecosystem but for the first time it includes measures of “justice,” which is mostly about preventing harm for groups of people.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: The Covid-19 emergency is ending. It's time for the patient to leave the hospital | CNN
After more than three very long years, it's finally happening: The Covid-19 pandemic is ending, at least in the formal sense, both in this country and abroad. This moment is not being marked with parades or big parties but rather with the flourishes of two administrative pens. On Friday, the World Health Organization announced that Covid-19 no longer constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, and this Thursday, the United States is set to end its own public health emergency declaration.
